I created this site to share what it was like trying to find help for my 12yo son who suffers from a medical sweating condition called hyperhidrosis. I hope this helps you on your journey while raising awareness. Please keep in mind that I'm not a doctor: I'm a mom just telling you that you're not alone.
I remember when he was a baby. He slipped on the kitchen floor and smacked his eye, my poor baby had a black eye for two weeks. I remember thinking that it was probably me who had left the floor too slippery after mopping, but then I remember his feet. They were slick to the touch. His hands, too.
I feel like the first doctor I talked to about this looked at me like okayyy?? As if I was being a spazzy overprotective mother. He told me my son would grow out of it and that he was most likely anxious because his body was changing, puberty, you know. So we waited... Except it didn't get better.
My son was very active and loved to play sports. Anything, really, but his favorite being basketball. Out of nowhere, he ended up quitting. My husband and I, not wanting to be pushy, just agreed his interests are just changing. Video games. Those kinds of things. All the while, my son's sweating was getting worse. I would go to pick up his controller and it would be wet to the touch. I saw the problem, but we didn't really know how to help.
I had only talked to my son's pediatrician about his sweating before when I decided to get a referral to a dermatologist. I was excited! I figured this person would know more about what was going on and would finally be able to help us find a solution. This is when my son was officially diagnosed with hyperhidrosis. At last! A name to the thing that had been tormenting my son all of this time!
We started with Drysol. It was this roll on my son had to apply every night. It ended up turning his skin into a prune. Next, his dermatologist prescribed these pills with a really long name that I can't pronounce. My son took them for a couple of weeks, and his sweating did improve. I could see him getting excited and feeling hopeful. But then he'd get these horrible stomach pains. He'd run to the bathroom thirty times a day without being able to pee. I asked the derm what else there was because these side effects were just too much to handle, he then brought up Botox, and I thought: "Botox!?' He explained it to us and said it was that or surgery, and it was clear from the start I wouldn't consider it. It was the way he said like, "Take it or leave it, lady" at that moment I knew I needed to do more research! I had to find a new dermatologist.
I had never had a teledoctor appointment before, but my friend suggested it during COVID and said it was simple. There are several options, but CallOnDoc was just $40 for the hyperhidrosis consultation. We filled out a few forms and later that day we received notice that they were processing the prescription in. They reviewed about my son's history and immediately asked if we had ever tried iontophoresis.
My son places his hands and feet in these two trays. They're connected to this little box and we fill the trays with tap water. I'm not going to pretend to know how it works, but all I know is that it works! My son is 12 now and dry and we can't believe it!!!! Trust your gut! Especially when it comes to your kids!
